Session Description
While we commonly dwell on the physical aspects and origins of poverty, poverty is very much a spiritual issue. Food for the Hungry’s Church Strengthening Program in Mozambique is on the frontlines of applying truth to fight both physical and spiritual poverty. Come prepared to hear real-life stories of what spiritual poverty looks like and how it is being overcome.

Speaker Info
Facilitated by Mapanza Nkwilimba, Country Director, FH/Mozambique

Mapanza came to FH/Mozambique in 2008 after having served with various government and nongovernmental organizations in Angola, Liberia, South Africa and Zambia. With degrees in education and African literature from the University of Zambia and a Master’s degree in International Leadership Development from Eastern University, Mapanza’s heart for developing future generations is evident. As country director, Mapanza oversees all FH programming including HIV/AIDS prevention and care; child survival funded by grants from USAID, the government of Mozambique and private donors; and the Church Strengthening Program.

Sorry, audio is not yet available for this session. Please check back later.

Session Description
More than the lack of material goods, the lack of positive social relationships is what often characterizes the poor. When a person’s natural web of relationships (family, coworkers, leaders, neighbors, friends) is broken or missing, poverty becomes extremely difficult to escape. Come explore the part each of us can play in overcoming social poverty with the power of the Gospel.

Speaker Info
Facilitated by Dr. Kim Freidah Brown, Country Director, FH / Nicaragua

Kim Brown was raised in the small town of Sag Harbor, NY, the daughter of two educators who instilled in her a deep love of learning and people. As a high school exchange student to Ecuador, her heart was stirred by the extreme poverty in the midst of golden cathedrals and her faith challenged her to live it out. In 1978 she married Ken, a Presbyterian pastor, and they began ministry with Latinos in New Mexico and Arizona. Kim worked as a teacher, counselor and school psychologist until they were called to mission service in Mexico in 1992 and then to Nicaragua in 1995. Kim joined FH as Country Director in 2002 and loves how per position encourages her to keep learning, serving, and collaborating with wonderful staff, colleagues, visiting teams, college students, and community members.

Session Description
What is God’s heart for children, and how do we walk with parents and communities to fulfill their role in nurturing their children? Find out how we encourage the community to continue fostering the development of children. Learn the common barriers that hinder child development, how we address them, and your part in this process as a child sponsor.

Speaker Info
Facilitated by Jewel Anita Hendrix, Director of Field Programs, Food for the Hungry

Growing up, Jewel Anita Hendrix dreamed of teaching at inner-city schools in the United States. But God had other plans. After she graduated from college, God placed Jewel Anita in Guatemala as a school teacher where she became concerned about the social problems facing her each day. After twelve years of working on her own, she joined Food for the Hungry to address the physical and spiritual needs of Guatemalans. She continued to serve with Food for the Hungry in Guatemala for nine years, leading child development programs.

Today, Jewel Anita is based out of the United States and serves as Director of Field Programs for FH’s Child Development Program, overseeing work in 14 countries worldwide and including more than 35,000 children. She frequently is “on the field” in countries of operation providing training, monitoring and evaluation.

Session Description
Poverty is not merely lack of income or material possessions. Poverty includes deprivation of basic human development. In Guatemala, high rates of chronic malnutrition in children under two years old prevent them from developing to the full physical, intellectual and spiritual potential that God has given them. In this session, we will discuss the complex origins of malnutrition and the importance of addressing chronic malnutrition in Guatemala and around the world.

Speaker Info
Facilitated by Victor Cortez, Country Director, FH/Guatemala | Regional Director, Latin America

Victor has served with FH for nearly 20 years in both Bolivia and Guatemala.
